We live in a world built on distraction.  Everything from our phones to the internet is designed to keep our attention focused on anything but our mission.  So what are your priorities?  Here’s my story.

Napoleon Hill – Outwitting the Devil

Transcript:

Good Morning everyone! Welcome to the Path to 1 Million. This is going to be episode 153. So I have been reading over the past few days this book that’s called Outwitting the Devil. And I know it’s backwards, but by Napoleon Hill, he’s the same author who wrote Think and Grow Rich. And this book was probably, it was not public probably, but it was published about 2011. And he talks in here about this concept about drifters and non drifters. And the difference between a drifter and a non drifter is that a drifter is somebody who just kind of like floats and goes from here to there. They don’t really have any kind of a game plan. They, you know, they live in ignorance. Their life has run on fear versus the non drifter is someone who is like really focused, someone who has some kind of a task that they’re going after, something that they want to achieve or what not.

And you know, I, I’ve, I thought a lot about you know, my move back to Michigan and how this is going to be impacting my life and everything that’s going to be happening there. And one of the things that I really wanted to do when I moved back to Michigan was I wanted to really, I wanted to relaunch my podcast project. Podcasting is something that I absolutely love to do. It’s something that I haven’t done in a while save for these Facebook lives. But I really wanted to get back into doing the podcasting. And the podcast that I did here in Long Beach I think set the groundwork for that; set the framework for that; showed me what was absolutely possible, but when I relaunched it in Michigan, my plans are to make it much, much bigger. And I want to be able to use that to be able to really impact and be able to drive the, the number of people that I’m able to positively impact.

And what’s amazing to me is that since I’ve set my mind to this and said, okay, this is what I would like to do. And I know this sounds or probably will sound a little bit existential, but it’s amazing how like the universe has started like to opening up and starting to show me things and present to me new ideas and how I can go even bigger than just a simple podcast. And as this has gone on, I’ve been taking like notes inside of Evernote and writing stuff down, finding websites, looking at different organizations, finding different people that I can connect with. And it’s just cool how everything is kinda like falling into place. It was maybe about a week ago or actually, no, when I was studying podcast, like really successful podcasts.

And this started probably closer to a month ago, I stumbled across this podcast. These two girls that are doing a great job and the name of their podcast is called Crime Junkies. I like their podcast because I like the true crime stuff. That’s why I hate investigation discovery cause I can literally spend all day watching the TV on investigation discovery. But it’s like a huge time suck for me anyways. These girls do this podcast, it’s about a half an hour, 45 minutes in length. They do a great job. And so one of the things that crossed my mind was, “Hey Cliff, you could do a podcast like this.” And you know, so what’s interesting, and I know I talked about this before in other Facebook lives is my brain is kind of like a computer. So if I give it a question or if I pose it a question it starts processing and starts thinking about it.

So next thing I know these ideas start popping up for this other podcast. And one of the things that occurred to me last night when I was out for my run was that, you know, is this the priority, you know, is this something that fits into my overall vision? Right? The whole drifter versus non drifter thing. I mean this is like the shiny new toy or is this something that is along the path that’s going to help me to achieve my overall goals? Cause really everything that I’m doing at the end of the day should be helping me to achieve my overall goal, not to support something that, you know, might or may or, or whatever it is. Maybe some point in time in the future. Who knows? But I just remember thinking to myself I have to table this because I’m gonna have to focus.

You know, that’s one of the things that with the advent of the internet, you can literally, you start off researching one topic and next thing you know, you’re floating off on to all these other topics and you see this other video and you know it just happens. The internet is just designed to keep your intention that way. Youtube is, is prolific at keeping people on their, not for just, you know, watching a video for one minute, but the next thing you know, it’s like you’re watching a video and then you see another video off to the side that promises to help you do one more thing and say, Oh, I got five minutes, I can watch this next video. And next thing you know, you know, you started off watching videos about hockey pads.

And actually, you know, I’m, I’m watching videos about proper running technique and it just kind of, you know, morphed into a half an hour, 45 minutes. So it’s not, you know, it’s a matter of keeping that focus, keeping keeping that on track. And I remembered one of the powerful lessons that I learned many moons ago was I was consulting for a software company and they were based out of Santa Barbara, which is North of here. And I went to their offices one day and trying to work for the company was proving to be very interesting. They had me, they had me working on a very specific topic and I was. But it seemed like every time that I talked to them they were, they were always having these new ideas that were coming in to play. And I don’t mind that there’s new ideas or maybe they’re responding to market changes, but it just seemed like there was a lot of like new, too much new stuff coming in. It’s kind of like hitting a moving target.

So I went up to their offices and I was going to chat with the CEO and the one thing that I discovered about their company very quickly is that it’s always like the CEO’s job to kind of set the vision for the company, right? The direction and the path that they’re going to follow. And it’s up to the president and the vice presidents to make sure that everybody inside of the company is executing towards that vision. The CEO is changing the vision like almost every day. Like he would come in and he would either visit a website or he would have read something in a magazine that was like, Hey guys, we have to do this and we have to incorporate this. And you know, the poor engineers, you know, you could just see it on their faces. They’re like, Oh no, not another change.

You know. And so, you know, they would, the engineers they want to get their paycheck so they’re out there, you know, redesigning the software to match the CEO’s new whim. But there was no focus. There was no there was no like, concrete vision that everybody could sink their teeth into and move forward. And I understand making little tweaks and little adjustments along the way, but he was really like steering the company in like a different direction every single day. And that company actually, you know, surprisingly enough, the company actually went bankrupt and there was a lot of lawsuits involved and everything else. And unfortunately I was never able to really complete my project with that company because everything kept changing. And finally I just, you know, finally just had to tell him like, look, I can’t, I can’t fill the project like you want me to.

So I think it’s better if we just go our separate ways. But you know, it just got me think of thinking, you know, once again, you know, last night with this whole podcast project, it’s like, really what are the priorities? What is your overall goal? What is your overall vision that you know, you want to achieve? And then everything is focused on achieving that particular vision. So anyways, obviously the second podcast I was like, you know, you need to put that thing on hold cliff and just, keep focusing on what you want to do, which is the, which is the Path to 1 Million. I want to be impacting as many people as I can and I want to grow that number every single day. That’s my primary focus. So anyways, just wanted to share that with you, some of the thoughts that were rattling around in my head. Thank you so much for stopping by today. I really do appreciate it. I hope your Saturday is going well, and I will be back again tomorrow with a another story.
